TWS doesn't make a cast longer, it just makes it effortless. I used the TWS type r, it doesn't cast noticeably any longer than my chronarch, however it is much easier to cast. The reason Daiwa reels cast a bit longer is because most of them have mag braking and wider spool than Shimano's, Shimano are more into making centrifugal braking reels
tws will not show its full potential on stock reels, this innovated line guide which is make the start of the cast so fast and free, it will max out the spool speed on a retractable spool, which will decrease its distance because it has too much brake force, thats why i have modified all my daiwa reels, to make tws combine with magnetic brake suits my needs, i have approx. 15~30% longer cast then most people using stock daiwa or shimano, when im using my 2nd gen tws zillion, whichs modified for myself, i can cast almost double the distance of other people which on my boat.
tips for long cast, master your thumb control, feel how the line flows, set the break as low as you can, dont always stay at your comfort zone on a break setting, keep pushing yourself use lower and lower every time. my frog reel zillion mag dial is at 1~2. sometimes 0, on my swimbait reel, which is T3, i set it at 0. 100% the time. even cast against wind. i would not say i never backlash, but if i do, i would say about 1/30 of a time...
hehe, my frog Metanium is always on free spool unless it gets real windy, frog is the easiest lure to cast super long because of heavy braided line you can almost ignore back lash, I spooled my Talula type r and Metanium with a 3/4oz frog on 65lb braid, sometimes I get to the backing and sometimes I'm 10ft into the backing and have the spool exposed, both are just stock reels. I've yet try my Metanium DC with a frog, curious to see how it goes but sadly it's a 6.2
As you said, TWS is not the sole factor make your reel cast super long, it's all the mods you do, maybe you should just buy a zillion hlc, it has the brake, spool and bearings to supplement a long cast
As of thumbing, generally speaking, always feather the spool at initial launch and let go before half way out, this is especially important if you have mismatched line/lure, for example cast a weightless senko on 1.0PE, senko itself is pretty heavy, almost too heavy for 1.0Pe to not digging into the spool, a frog with 65lb braided almost require no thumbing unless cast into the strong wind
