Dalrymple man dies after going through ice on Lake SimcoeThe man pulled from Lake Simcoe yesterday has died in a Toronto hospital.
Though no details have been released by the Durham Regional Police Service, family members confirmed Dalrymple resident Ken Eastcott passed away following the rescue on Lake Simcoe yesterday (March 24).
“Ken was warm and funny and always had a smile,” said one of his more than 50 nieces and nephews.
As one of 14 children – six brothers and seven sisters – family was incredibly important to Eastcott, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday.
“He didn’t have kids of his own but he had a pug named Elvis that may as well have been his child. Our family is huge and he will be missed by everyone,” the niece said.
“This is devastating for our family. Anyone who knew him loved him.”
Eastcott was part of a larger group that was out on the ice near Thorah Island, according to Brock Township Fire Chief Rick Harrison, who noted that circumstances of the incident are still unclear.
The initial report indicated that two people had crashed through the ice.
“We’re not sure if a second person was pulled out of the water before we got there but everyone else has been accounted for,” Chief Harrison said in an interview around 8 p.m. Saturday night.
Eastcott was pulled from the lake with no vital signs but was resuscitated by emergency personnel prior to being airlifted to Sunnybrook, where he later died.
