1, Start by placing the canoe beside your vehicle with the yoke just behind the back of the front door, or where the post is between the front and
back doors of a 4 door vehicle.
2, Place the four foam canoe blocks over the gunwales evenly spaced front and back of the yoke.
3, Using two people, lift the canoe on top of the vehicle so that the yoke is just behind the front doors.
4, Adjust the foam blocks as needed until the canoe sits evenly on the roof. (often there are roll bars inside the roof, one just behind the windshield, one usually in the middle and often another one near the back, try to get the foam blocks on top of these if possible)
5, Tie a centre strap across the middle using a truckers hitch knot to secure it tightly. This is important as this line stops the canoe from sliding off the side of your roof.
6, Next using a V formation secure the front and back of the canoe to the corners of your vehicle. Many vehicles will have hooks under the bumpers, if not you may have to get creative, look under the hood or trunk and you should be able to find a solid place to tie to. Make sure you don’t hook to anything plastic or that may get hot when he vehicle is running, (aka stay away from the muffler or exhaust)
7, Often the front V strap can hook to the front handle of the canoe, but when you get to the back often the back of the canoe will hang over the vehicle so attaching to the back seat is a good option. In the end you want your front and back lines to form a /car\ formation or a \car/ formation but not a \car\ formation as it may just slide forward, if you have to stop suddenly.
8, When you are done, make sure all loose ends are tied off or tucked in.
9, Don’t be afraid to pull over and tighten the straps or ropes down if they seem to loosen while driving.
